About The Satin Chaps

The Satin Chaps “Rille.” That’s what the Germans call groove, and that’s what The Satin Chaps are all about. Hailing from Portland, Oregon, the European style go-go / soul octet ply their trade in the largely uncharted waters of ‘60s groove-pop composers like Ingfried Hoffman, Gert Wilden, and Heidi Brühl. To make it palatable stateside (and to make it their own) they mix hints of American purveyors like Memphis soul kings The Bar Kays and NW garage legends The Wailers. Formed around the core of drummer Luke Strahota (he of the High Violets), bassist Eric Hedford (of Dandy Warhols fame) and keyboardist Peter Dean (former Fast Computers number one), the ensemble has exploded forth from its inception in 2010. Aided by the howl of their three-piece horn section, the whiz-bang of their Hammond organ and the percussion necessities to make it all sparkle, the Chaps specialize in original, sweaty, booty-shaking, good times music. The group’s self released debut long play, Might I Suggest The Satin Chaps, is as much an homage to Booker T and the MGs and Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass, as it is the birth of a fertile new playground in the oft mined heritage of garage and soul, overflowing with plenty of rille.
